Curiosities of Palazzina of Stupinigi

Here are some particular features that make Reggia of Venaria even more interesting!😊

1) Royal Residence: The Stupinigi Hunting Lodge was commissioned by Victor Amadeus II of Savoy in 1729 as a royal hunting residence. It was designed by the architect Filippo Juvarra, one of the greatest exponents of Italian Baroque.

2) Unique Shape: The building's layout has a Saint Andrew's cross shape, which was unique and innovative for its time. This particular configuration allowed for a panoramic view in all directions, ideal for hunting.

3) Rich Decoration: The interiors of the lodge are decorated with frescoes, gilded stuccoes, and fine furnishings, many of which were created by prominent artists of the time, such as Giovanni Battista Crosato and Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo.

4) Symbol of the Stag: Outside the lodge, atop the central dome, there is a statue of a stag, a symbol of hunting. This statue has become an icon of the residence and represents its original purpose.

5) Multifunctional Use: Although it was originally built as a hunting residence, the lodge has been used over the centuries for various events and celebrations, including royal weddings and state receptions.

6) Museum of Art and Furnishings: Today, the Stupinigi Hunting Lodge houses the Museum of Art and Furnishings, which preserves numerous pieces of furniture and art objects from the period, offering a glimpse into the life of the Piedmontese nobility.

7) UNESCO World Heritage: The Stupinigi Hunting Lodge is part of the Savoy Residences, a collection of royal dwellings recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for their historical and architectural significance.

It should also be mentioned that on June 17, 2024, after 182 years, a civil wedding took place at the Stupinigi Hunting Lodge! The last wedding held there was between Victor Emmanuel II and Maria Adelaide of Austria on  April 12, 1842!
