Palazzo Madama

Welcome to Palazzo Madama;

you are standing before one of the oldest buildings in the city. Originally, it served as the "decuman gate" of the ancient Roman city "Augusta Taurinorum." After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, it was transformed into a defensive fortress.

From the 13th century, it came under the ownership of various noble families, first the Marquises of Monferrato and, from the 14th century, the House of Savoy, who carried out several expansions of the structure. In 1568, the palace housed the Holy Shroud, and in 1637 it became the residence of "Maria Cristina of Bourbon," who was known as "Madama," giving the palace its current name, Palazzo Madama!

In the 17th century, architect Filippo Juvarra designed a project for the House of Savoy that included a beautiful Baroque palace in white stone surrounding the ancient historic walls.

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the project was only partially completed and was halted in 1721, leaving it unfinished. As a result, the complex has a single Baroque facade (facing the Royal Palace), while the remaining parts reveal the ancient beauty of the original construction.

Years passed, and the palace lost its function as a residence. In 1934, it became the seat of the Civic Museum of Ancient Art (still present today) and underwent multiple renovations, which were completed in 2006 with the advent of the Olympics in Turin.

This restored the splendid palace, rich in opulence and history, to the city, telling a story spanning more than 2,000 years!
