Fiorile – Orti e Fiori in Mostra returns for its 12th edition; it is a cultural and horticultural event dedicated to greenery, gardening, vegetable growing, and sustainability. The event celebrates the Moncalieri area—a true “green lung” of the Turin region that, amidst hills and navigable stretches of the Po River, leads toward the Savoy capital through a human-influenced landscape recognized as a UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve since 2016.
Sponsored and funded by the City of Moncalieri through its Department of Culture and organized by the “Giardino Forbito ETS” Cultural Association, this event returns on the last weekend of October to celebrate autumn in all its facets.
“Fiorile is an opportunity for Moncalieri to showcase its identity,” state Mayor Lorenzo Mauro and Councillor for Culture Antonella Parigi, “as it represents a meeting point of nature, culture, and community. The Rose Garden—long the green heart of our events calendar—brings together the city’s history and its horticultural heritage. This event is a key element of the ‘Moncalieri City in Green’ initiative, a network of locations and activities that tell the story of a territory growing around its own identity and landscape heritage.”
The chrysanthemum has long been a highlight of the autumn season. Derived from the Greek words *chrysós* (gold) and *ánthemon* (flower), this plant boasts ancient Asian origins and embodies contrasting meanings depending on the culture: while in Asia it symbolizes the sun, life, joy, and longevity, in Italy it is traditionally associated with mourning and the commemoration of the dead—largely due to its late-autumn bloom coinciding with All Saints’ Day. Renowned for its extraordinary cold hardiness and myriad varieties, the chrysanthemum represents a pinnacle of local floriculture—one that Fiorile aims to showcase and celebrate in all its nuances.
Hosted in the spectacular Rose Garden of the Royal Castle of Moncalieri, the event will open with the unveiling of two new flowerbeds featuring native chrysanthemums. The project stems from a collaboration with the Venaria Gardeners and will showcase blooms from the historic local grower Floricoltura Cargnino, accompanied by remarks from Alessia Bellone, Director of the Venaria Gardeners’ School.
The beauty of the garden will be set to music by the Moncalieri Jazz Festival—curated by Maestro Ugo Viola—featuring two concerts as part of the *Jazz a Corte* and *Notte Nera del Jazz* events, alongside other musical interludes throughout the weekend.
The program offers a rich blend of cultural and participatory activities:
– The Festival of Lights (Diwali): In collaboration with the Italian Hindu Union (Sanatana Dharma Samgha), the central Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II will host the creation of a colorful chrysanthemum-petal mandala around the Neptune Fountain on October 24th; at dusk, small floating lamps will be placed upon the water.
– Art and creativity: In the “Art Space,” painter Curtis Sheeran will lead a botanical watercolor workshop open to all ages and skill levels. Participants can create their own chrysanthemum illustration as a keepsake, starting from a pre-sketched outline.
– Immersive walks and culinary delights: A partnership with *Agricampus del Cammino delle Colline Torinesi* will guide visitors on a hike along trails and paths to the Cargnino flower nursery, where they can admire the blooms at their peak while enjoying music and refreshments.
Rounding out the event is the classic market-exhibition featuring plants and artisanal products related to gardening and food & wine, accompanied by talks, workshops, biodiversity activities for adults and children (in collaboration with Beesù and *Impollinatori Metropolitani*), guided walks, and entertainment throughout the venue.
