Welcome to the Basilica of Superga of Turin!
Located at an altitude of 672 meters, the Basilica of Superga of Turin is one of the unmistakable symbols of the city of Turin! Built by the famous architect from Messina, Filippo Juvarra, this imposing structure stands as a symbol of rebirth after a long war carried out by the Kingdom of Savoy in the early decades of the 18th century.
The Basilica of Superga was built by the will of the then King of Savoy, Victor Amadeus II, who personally ascended to the location of the current Basilica to get a better view of the enemy siege and to study the best defensive tactics. After many years, victory honored the King, and he had the Basilica constructed to commemorate this event! It took 14 long years to complete; the inauguration took place in 1731.
The hill on which the Basilica stands is a natural park, protected by the Piedmont region, rich in trails and nature paths. It allows visitors to immerse themselves in greenery and breathe air different from that of the typical city.

A unique and special way to reach the Basilica!
In 1884, on the occasion of the Italian Universal Exposition, a connection was built between the “lower” and “upper” parts (approximately 3 km) of the hill to facilitate access between the Basilica of Superga and the city.
The means of transport, called the “Dentera” or “Rack Railway”, allowed and still allows tourists to comfortably reach the Basilica in about twenty minutes.

In recent years, the two stations, Sassi and Superga, have been enriched with museum exhibits from that era, so visitors can appreciate the old carriages used and see historical photos that depict the periods of the initial construction.

Unfortunately, the city of Turin was the victim of one of the biggest tragedies in the world of football: on May 4th, 1949, during the return flight from a match in Lisbon, the plane carrying the “Torino FC” team crashed on the hill of Superga next to the Superga Cathedral amid a storm. Every year, the memory of the 31 victims (27 of whom were between 22 and 33 years old) is commemorated with a mass and the reading of the name and surname of each deceased, open to everyone, with the current football team among the participants.
This tribute goes beyond any football allegiance; it is a very emotional place where you can admire the old team. There are photos of all the players and many items that will forever preserve their memory! It’s a sad place that nonetheless conveys many emotions.
