A castle between history, literature and landscape

The Azeglio Castle is located in the heart of the village of Azeglio, in the Canavese area, just a few kilometres from Lake Viverone. Surrounded by hills and a large park, the castle is one of the most charming historic residences in the region, connected not only to medieval history but also to Italian culture and literature.
Unlike many other castles in Canavese, Azeglio Castle today appears more as a noble residence than a defensive fortress, reflecting the transformations it underwent over the centuries.
Medieval origins
The origins of the castle date back to the Middle Ages, when Azeglio was a strategic location along the routes connecting Canavese with the Biella area. During this time, the castle served defensive purposes and played a role in controlling the surrounding territory.

Over the centuries, the structure passed through different noble families and underwent several architectural changes, adapting to new functions and lifestyles.
The castle and Massimo d’Azeglio
Azeglio Castle is closely connected to Massimo d’Azeglio, an important Italian statesman, writer and key figure of the Risorgimento.
He spent time in the family castle, finding inspiration for his work. His presence adds cultural value to the site, making it not only a historic landmark but also a symbol of 19th-century Italian history.
From fortress to noble residence
Over time, the castle gradually lost its military function and was transformed into an elegant residence. Defensive elements were replaced or adapted to create more comfortable interiors and refined living spaces.
The surrounding park still contributes to the charm of the property, making it one of the most distinctive places in the village of Azeglio.

Today the castle is privately owned and not always open to visitors. However, it remains one of the main landmarks of the village and can be admired from the outside.
Its location makes it a perfect stop as part of an itinerary exploring the castles and lakes of Canavese, especially when combined with a visit to nearby Lake Viverone.
