. FIRST SECTION – Who is Fan Ho?
Fan Ho (1931–2016) is considered one of Asia’s most important street photographers, celebrated for capturing the soul of Hong Kong during the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Shanghai in 1931, Ho moved to Hong Kong with his family at the age of 18. By then, he was already a passionate—albeit self-taught—photographer.
Dubbed the “Cartier-Bresson of the East,” Fan Ho produced the core of his body of work before the age of twenty-eight, garnering widespread acclaim early on. Over the course of his career, the artist won approximately 300 international awards and honors.
His talent also caught the attention of the film industry; he embarked on a successful career as an actor and later as a director, working in the field until his retirement at the age of sixty-five.
Throughout his career, Ho was named one of the world’s top ten photographers eight times by the Photographic Society of America. Today, his works are held in the collections of major museums worldwide, including the M+ Museum of Contemporary Art and the Heritage Museum in Hong Kong, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Palazzo Falletti di Barolo, located in the center of Turin, is one of the most significant and best-preserved noble residences from the 17th century. At the end of the 17th century, Ottavio Provana di Druent commissioned Gian Francesco Baroncelli to expand the old family palace and engaged artists from Lombardy, Rome, and Genoa to decorate its interiors.
Upon the Count’s death, the palace passed to the Falletti di Barolo family, who commissioned Benedetto Alfieri to update the décor of several rooms on the first floor. The final owners were Carlo Tancredi and Giulia Colbert di Maulévrier, who had married in Paris in 1806. Giulia and Tancredi transformed the palace into Turin’s most renowned salon of the Risorgimento era, as well as a genuine center of Christian charity. During those same years, the Marquises—bound by a deep friendship—hosted Silvio Pellico, who served as their secretary and librarian. Upon Giulia’s death in 1864, the palace passed to the Opera Barolo, an organization she had established in her will.
