title article:
Still Image, photographs by Jessica Lange
SUBTITLE:
Jessica Lange’s photographs do not seek so much to explain or tell a story in a linear fashion as to make visible the movement of life—its substance, its rhythm, and its musicality. The images appear as fragments and whispers, moments that compose a suspended narrative made up also of silences and of what remains unsaid.

. FIRST SECTION – Who is Jessica Lange and what is “Still Image” about

Born and raised in Cloquet, Minnesota, the acclaimed and multi-award-winning actress Jessica Lange studied photography at the University of Minnesota on a scholarship, which she eventually gave up to pursue acting. During her time in Paris in the 1970s, Lange befriended photographers Robert Frank and Danny Lyon, who helped her develop and refine her technique. In the early 1990s, she rediscovered her passion for photography after receiving a Leica camera as a gift; she has not stopped taking pictures since.
Her photographs have been exhibited at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York (2009); the Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow (2014); the Centre d’Art Santa Mònica in Barcelona (2015); and the Centro Cultural de Cascais in Portugal (2015), among other venues. She was the first recipient of the George Eastman House Honors Award in 2009. Her publications include her first monograph, 50 Photographs (powerHouse Books, 2008), as well as In Mexico (RM, 2010), Highway 61 (powerHouse Books, 2019), Dérive (powerHouse Books, 2022), and the children’s book It’s About A Little Bird (Sourcebooks, 2013).
The exhibition “Still Image” unfolds across eight thematic sections (Highway 61, Mexico, Dérive, Freak Show, Gestures, Landscapes, Presences of the Past, and World) featuring largely unseen work; it focuses particularly on photographs taken from the late 1990s onwards, in which artistic sensibility and a documentary approach reveal a profound, melancholic perspective on the contemporary world.
The exhibition will run from October 7, 2026, to February 7, 2027!

. THIRD SECTION – Location (Musei Reali di Torino, Chiablese Rooms)
The Chiablese Rooms are located on the ground floor of the palace of the same name and consist of a series of rooms accessible from Piazzetta Reale.
Their current appearance dates back to 1753, when Duke Charles Emmanuel III commissioned Benedetto Alfieri to remodel the building to serve as the residence for his son, Benedetto Maria Maurizio, Duke of Chiablese, and to house court offices.
In 2013, the premises were restored and repurposed to serve as exhibition spaces.

. FOURTH SECTION – Event organizer
Produced by Ares in collaboration with the Royal Museums of Turin, the exhibition presents photographic works by American actress and photographer Jessica Lange (Cloquet, Minnesota, USA, April 20, 1949) and brings largely unseen works to Italy for the first time.
To coincide with the exhibition, the Circolo dei Lettori Foundation has curated a series of events titled “Along Highway 61,” organized with the Royal Museums of Turin to explore the landscape and identity of the United States through photography, music, history, and literature. Key themes include the memory of rural America, the myth of the American Dream, musical traditions, and the literary Mississippi.
The program of related events continues in collaboration with the National Museum of Cinema, which is screening the film The Postman Always Rings Twice (USA, 1981), directed by Bob Rafelson and starring Jessica Lange and Jack Nicholson. The film will be shown at the Cinema Massimo in Turin (Screen 3) on Tuesday, December 15, at 8:30 PM, with a repeat screening on
Wednesday, December 16, at 6:00 PM.
