A fortress perched between rock and valley

The Montestrutto Castle is located in the area of Settimo Vittone, in a spectacular position on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Dora Baltea valley. Its location, close to the mountains and along ancient routes leading to the Aosta Valley, makes it one of the most scenic castles in Canavese.
The surrounding landscape, with terraced vineyards, rocks and flowing water, creates a unique setting where nature and architecture blend together. The castle remains one of the most distinctive landmarks of the area.
Medieval origins
The origins of Montestrutto Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when it was built as a defensive structure to control the valley and the routes connecting Canavese with the Aosta Valley.

Its elevated and hard-to-access position made it ideal for defense and surveillance. Like many castles in the region, it was part of a wider territorial control system along a major transit corridor.
A strategic outpost along the Dora Baltea
The castle occupied a key position along the Dora Baltea valley, which was essential for the movement of goods, armies and travelers. From here, it was possible to monitor traffic and control access to the Alpine areas.
Its proximity to important centers such as Ivrea strengthened its role within a network of fortifications protecting the Canavese region. Beyond its military function, the castle also symbolized authority and territorial control.
Transformations over time
Over the centuries, as military needs evolved, the castle gradually lost its defensive function. However, thanks to its solid structure and strategic position, it has retained much of its original appearance.
Preservation efforts and later adaptations have helped maintain its historical identity, which still reflects a strong medieval character.

The castle today
Today, Montestrutto Castle is privately owned but remains one of the most scenic landmarks in the area. It can be admired from the outside and is easily recognizable during a visit to Settimo Vittone.
Its location along the valley and near hiking and cycling routes makes it an ideal stop for those looking to combine nature, outdoor activities and historical exploration.
