- The Stupinigi Hunting Lodge was commissioned by Victor Amadeus II of Savoy in 1729 as a royal hunting residence. It was designed by the architect Filippo Juvarra, one of the greatest exponents of Italian Baroque.
- Unique Shape: The building’s layout has a Saint Andrew’s cross shape, which was unique and innovative for its time. This particular configuration allowed for a panoramic view in all directions, ideal for hunting.
- The interiors of the lodge are decorated with frescoes, gilded stuccoes, and fine furnishings, many of which were created by prominent artists of the time, such as Giovanni Battista Crosato and Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo.
- Outside the lodge, atop the central dome, there is a statue of a stag, a symbol of hunting. This statue has become an icon of the residence and represents its original purpose.
- Although it was originally built as a hunting residence, the lodge has been used over the centuries for various events and celebrations, including royal weddings and state receptions. (Last was in 2024!)
- The Stupinigi Hunting Lodge is part of the Savoy Residences, a collection of royal dwellings recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for their historical and architectural significance.
