A medieval fortress between lake and mountains

The Montalto Dora Castle is one of the most scenic castles in Canavese, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the village and nearby Lake Pistono. Its dramatic setting, at the foot of the mountains and surrounded by a morainic landscape, makes it one of the most recognizable landmarks in the area.

The combination of rock, water and architecture creates a unique atmosphere that strongly evokes the medieval past. Today, it remains one of the must-see locations in Canavese.

Medieval origins

The origins of Montalto Dora Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when it was built as a defensive structure to control the territory and the routes connecting the plains with the Alpine areas.

Its elevated and naturally protected position made it ideal for surveillance and defense. Like many castles in the region, it was part of a broader defensive network.

A strategic outpost in Canavese

The castle was used to control access to the valley and the routes linking Ivrea with the surrounding mountains. Its dominant position allowed for wide visibility over the territory, making it a key defensive point.

Over the centuries, it was controlled by various noble families and local powers.

Transformations over time

Over time, the castle gradually lost its military role. However, unlike many other fortifications, Montalto Dora Castle has remained well preserved.

Restoration and maintenance efforts have helped retain much of its original structure, making it one of the most authentic examples of medieval architecture in Canavese.

The castle today

Today, the castle is privately owned but can be visited during special openings, events or guided tours.

Even from the outside, it is a popular destination thanks to its scenic location. Its proximity to Lake Pistono and local walking paths makes it ideal for a visit combining nature, history and landscape.
