. FIRST SECTION – What is Luci d’Artista: history, art, and sustainability
Created in 1998 by the City of Turin to celebrate the winter season through contemporary art, Luci d’Artista has become a true symbol of Turin’s cultural identity. Far from ordinary holiday decorations, these are genuine visual and conceptual light artworks designed by premier Italian and international artists (such as Mario Merz, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Rebecca Horn, Daniel Buren, and Joseph Kosuth).
In recent years, the festival has embraced an eco-conscious philosophy: all installations utilize low-energy LED technologies and recycled materials, pairing visual spectacle with environmental care.

. SECOND SECTION – Iconic light works & historic center walking map
Wandering through the historic core on crisp winter evenings, you will encounter world-famous installations:
- “Il volo dei numeri” by Mario Merz (Mole Antonelliana): The red glowing Fibonacci numbers ascending the dome of the Mole Antonelliana, the ultimate symbol of the festival.
- “Tappeto Volante” by Peter Eisenman (Piazza Palazzo di Cittร ): A suspended geometric carpet of lights evoking oriental weaves above the Town Hall square.
- “Cosmotessera” by Luca Pannoli (Piazza San Carlo): A conceptual light piece projecting words related to cosmos, sharing, and humanity.
- “Planetario” by Carmelo Giammello (Via Roma): A breathtaking blue galaxy filled with planets, constellations, and nebulae lighting up the main shopping street.
- Poetic Installations under the Arcades: Thought-provoking words and light graphics scattered beneath Turin’s grand porticoes.

Luci d’Artista is a city-wide event that enriches not only the Baroque center but also residential districts. Each edition refreshes the lineup with temporary and site-specific pieces:
Luci d’Artista Special Project 2026: This year’s new additions focus on interactivity, augmented reality, and cutting-edge lighting design crafted by emerging artists selected through international calls.
District Light Art: Installations are placed in neighborhood markets, suburban piazzas, and along bridges over the Po River (such as Ponte Vittorio Emanuele I).

. SIXTH SECTION – Practical Tips: Operating Hours, Open-Top Bus, & Night Photography
Dates & Hours: The lights are traditionally switched on in 21 October and stay active until 31 January (from dusk at around 5:00 PM until 11:30 PM / 12:00 AM).
City Sightseeing “City Lights Tour”: Special open-top (or transparent glass roof) sightseeing buses operate during the event, offering elevated views of the installations in comfort.
Photography Tip: The best time to photograph the light installations is during the blue hour (right after sunset) when the sky keeps a deep cobalt blue hue that balances perfectly with the LED colors.
