The Basilica of Superga of Turin is one of the most visited monuments in the city, along with the Egyptian Museums, the Mole Antonelliana, the Royal Museums, Palazzo Madama, the Automobile Museum and the GAM.

  1. Plan your visit in advance; the earlier you do it, the more options you’ll have for choosing the day and time slot.
  2. Book your tours online and download your ticket to your phone to skip the lines at the ticket office.
  3. If you’re not staying in accommodation near the monument, check public transportation options in advance and how long it takes to reach there (Tramway took around 20 minutes from the city centre!).
  4. Dress comfortably and in layers so you can adapt to different temperatures.

  1. Inside, there is a spiral staircase with 131 steps that will take you to the base of the dome, allowing you to enjoy a breathtaking view of the city of Turin.
  2. The Basilica of Superga stands at an elevation of 672 meters; to build it, the constructors had to lower the hill by 40 meters to create a flat surface for construction.
  3. It seems that the name “Superga” has distant Lombard origins from the lady “Saroperga,” who owned the land in the 1700s.
  4. A tragic memory dates back to May 4, 1949, when the plane carrying the Torino FC soccer team, returning from a trip to Lisbon, crashed on the hill a few meters from the Basilica due to a severe storm. Every year on May 4, this tragedy is commemorated with a mass and a funeral vigil at the crash site.
  5. In the cloister of the Basilica is the Hall of the Popes, so called because it houses portraits of all the pontiffs recognized by the Christian Church. The collection is second only to the one in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome.

“The first thing I have to say is that the Basilica is beautiful at any time of day, but sunset is an experience you absolutely shouldn’t miss! The view of the city transitioning from daylight to artificial light is a unique moment that, if you have the chance to witness, will not disappoint you!😊”
