Palazzina of Stupinigi Turin;
We are in Nichelino, 11 kilometers from the center of Turin! The Palazzina di Stupinigi is considered one of the most prestigious Savoy residences in all of Piedmont! It covers over 31,000 square meters of interior space and more than 150,000 square meters of gardens and parks! It was also a prime destination for parties and leisure activities!
As you approach the Palazzina, the first thing that will strike you is its grandeur. Designed by the brilliant architect Filippo Juvarra in the early 18th century, this Baroque palace was commissioned by Vittorio Amedeo II, the Duke of Savoy. The intention was to create a retreat where the royal family could indulge in their passion for hunting. However, what Juvarra created was far more than just a hunting lodge; it was a symbol of power and prestige, a place where the nobility could gather and celebrate their status.
In its history, the Palazzina of Stupinigi has hosted weddings of royals and notable figures such as Maria Teresa of Savoy and Count Charles Philippe of Artois, who was later crowned King of France as Charles X, as well as that of Victor Emmanuel II before he became the first King of Italy!
Personally, I really appreciate the gardens surrounding the Palazzina of Stupinigi Turin! Inside; there are many things to see and the palace is still very beautiful and distinctive! The only thing is, there aren't many places to eat or sleep nearby! I would recommend visiting for the day (3 to 4 hours is enough to enjoy everything!) and staying elsewhere.😊
Starting in the 19th century, after the era of great hunting parties ended, Stupinigi became home to an incredible zoo of exotic animals, including ostriches, kangaroos, and most notably Fritz, an elephant given to King Charles Felix by the Viceroy of Egypt. In 1919, part of the Palazzina's rooms were transformed into the Museum of Furniture, and over the course of the 20th century, it became one of the main tourist attractions in the Turin area.
As mentioned, the area isn't very convenient for reaching the city center and other attractions. However, if any of you enjoy staying closer to nature and in open spaces (for example, I personally sometimes enjoy taking a break from the "chaos" of the city), I'm happy to recommend some accommodations that might suit your needs! 😊
